Dave's Market Update 16.02.16

IN FRUIT

As summer draws to a close (finding that hard to believe with the humidity this week), our attention turns to our traditional Autumn fruits. Of course, apples play a very big part in this category. In addition to Galas we now have Red Jonathons from Bilpin and Fuji apples from Orange. Pretty much anything else is last years fruit. Personally, I would go the new fruit every time.

The other Autumn specialty to me is plums. Our customers are loving the Queen Garnetts but the Tegan Blues and Sugar Plums both remain favourites of mine and are both far less expensive than the Queen Garnetts. Avocados continue to fall in price and in north Queensland. Last week, I had a beautiful new season green skin avo on toast for breakfast at a fantastic farm that I will discuss in a couple of weeks.

Enjoy tasty and well priced lychees this week as we are very near the end for them I am afraid. Seedless watermelon is cheap and good and ideal for this steamy weather. For a change (but only for a short time) we have yellow champagne melon, a little dearer but a delicious change from the traditional red seedless which is pretty much an all year around product. This is the time for honeydew melons and this week we have some really good yellow skinned honeydews in store. All grapes are now good eating but this week I am recommending those little Sultana grapes as their window is now and it does not last for long, enjoy them while you can.

IN VEGETABLE

Spuds and pumpkin are the best value this week. At last snow peas are coming off the lofty heights they have been at. There is also good value to be found in our net capsicum line, Lebanese cucumbers and beans. Best value of all (I think) are the brushed potatoes... I would buy a few extra this week, they are cheap and keeping very well. I am loving a salad every night with this humid weather. Put in a fig, some baby fennel, any of the many punnets of delicious snacking tomatoes and at last a well priced avocado, it’s the perfect accompaniment to any meal.
