Dave's Market Update 09.02.16

IN FRUIT

The big news of the week is the dramatic drop in avocado prices. In this industry, pricing has always been very responsive to consumer demand. The last three weeks has seen people decide to either stop buying or reduce their avocado purchases and so now the price has dropped. The price of big fruit has dropped more so than small fruit and this will be reflected in the retail price this week. Look for great specials in large fruit and reed avocados in our stores this week. As this week goes forward our white seedless grapes will no longer be the Menindee seedless variety but move to the Thompson seedless which are the most popular of all grapes and what we will sell for the next ten weeks or so. Last year and in years prior we have seen these being sold very cheaply but with our cheaper dollar it looks to me that lots of our supply will go to the export market, good news for the farmers, not so good for the local consumer. As Autumn approaches we say goodbye to our Tassie cherries. Heavy rain last week means they are finished and plums become very popular at this time. To me, the Amber Jewels and the Queen Garnets are the two best eating plums this week. Those delicious sweet little Sugar plums and Tegan Blues will also start now and come into their own over the next week or so. The new season Williams pears have suffered some weather damage this year and we will be able to offer excellent eating Imperfect pick fruit in this area over the coming weeks. Seedless watermelon and rockmelons are both eating very well and both reasonably priced. In berries, blueberries and raspberries are the best options. Finally, you cant go past figs as an outstanding in season option this week. This second crop is now at its peak and will be fantastic to eat for the rest of February and into March. The Galas remain the pick of the apples and soon they will be joined by other new season varieties.


IN VEGETABLE

Our vegetable supplies (though not especially cheap) are very good quality at the moment. Corn on the cob is a real summer favourite and my pick of the week for vegetables. Normally at this time our premium quality corn would be sourced in Victoria but not so at this time. We have the majority of our superb quality product being grown right here at Wallacia and it is really good. Great to see such excellent produce from the Sydney basin. Other really good veg this week include Tasmanian broccoli, beans, and Spanish onions (from Australia). I am loving the baby fennel in my salads, it is really well priced... plus, we add tasty specialty tomatoes and figs and at last reasonably priced avocados. The summer salad has never been tastier and great value as well. Love the summer season!
