Dave's Market Update 02.02.16

IN FRUIT

I can't stop talking about the new season Galas and Williams Pears. I just love that fresh new season taste. I sometimes drive through Bilpin going to my farm and it wonderful to see this fruit bowl so close to Sydney. I tried a few Victorian Galas at the market, they just don’t eat like this beautiful local fruit. As predicted avocados have peaked in price and the coming week will see 10% and chopped off their price. This week, there has been lots of publicity about Queen Garnett plums and their anti-oxidant qualities and their fantastic flavour. For those waiting to taste these we will have one of our famous one day chopper specials in our stores this Friday. Last 10 days of plentiful great mangoes this week with Honey Golds, loose, by the tray and even some imperfects in our stores, plus our exclusive Silky mangoes both from central Queensland, more details of these in my pick of the week section. Wonderful grapes and figs round off the fruit offer at Harris Farm this week.

IN VEGETABLES

A couple of the out of the ordinary veg I would recommend this week. The baby Lebanese cucumbers in punnets and baby fennel are both fantastic additions to any salad. Iceberg lettuce quality is superb and would be the basis of said salad, and for me a Reed avocado would top the salad off. Lots of ripe tomatoes around this week and if you are interested to try your hand at sauce we have a range of products available that would meet your needs and this is the week, speak to the store manager, they may well be in stock at the time or the manager will chase them up for you if not available. Broccoli has fallen by half and the product is far better than it was two weeks ago... those intensely hot days take their toll. Pumpkin continues to improve in quality as the local crops come to maturity.
