Dave's Market Update 25.01.16

IN FRUIT

More new season fruits in our shops this week with Williams pears and Gala apples now in and ready to go. The Galas are from Bilpin and are in our shops within a couple of days of picking. The next few days look to be not as hot and a bit overcast and this is good for the fruit. Although our Pink ladies and Granny Smith apples are still in good condition, they are last seasons fruit whereas these Galas are freshly picked and make a great addition to the school lunch box. Also in pears this week, all our stores will be selling new season Williams pears from Victoria, replacing the old season Packham pears. The William pears ripen quicker than the Packhams so I would recommend that once you see them get a yellow tinge, they are best stored in the fridge... in fact the Galas will retain their crispness better if stored the same way, particularly whilst this humid weather persists. Other products that are easing in price include rockmelons (specially the bigger fruit), figs, blueberries and raspberries. Still lots of limes, peaches, nectarines and lychees to choose from. Don’t forget those Australian Valencia oranges, they don’t look so good but they are great to eat. A lot of customers are asking about avocados and their price. Unfortunately I can't see any relief in this situation this side of Easter, but two things I am certain of is that the West Australian fruit is superior in every way to what is coming from New Zealand (certainly the cost price in the markets reflects this) and I also think the best option at the moment is in the reed variety - I also love the flavour of this fruit.

IN VEGETABLE

Tomatoes continue to be a bargain but some of the more delicate vegetables we stock really don’t like the humidity we always get at this time of the year. So with coriander, dill, Chinese veg, English spinach and radish, all those sort of lines are a bit hit or miss with regard to supply and quality. Some lines may not be available some days over the coming weeks. Some of the more robust veg continue to be well supplied and they include corn, beans, zucchini and celery. The pumpkins, squash and hard produce lines are unchanged.
