Dave's Market Update 05.01.16

IN FRUIT

January is a fantastic time for Australian fruit. As discussed my Pick of the Week post, our Tasmanian cherries are world's best over this next 5 or 6 weeks. The milder climate in Tasmania is far more suited to cherries than the very hot areas on the mainland that were our traditional farmlands for this product. Don’t forget that the value is often in the medium to smaller size fruit, just as tasty but not so highly sought after by the exporters serving the Asian markets. Other wonderful eating fruits this week are peaches (whites are the best), nectarines (yellow varieties are my pick this week) and of course those fantastic KP mangoes - maybe not as attractive to the eye as some of the other newer varieties but still the best to eat. We are now starting great eating and not expensive grapes and here, the white seedless grapes are my pick. At Harris Farm this week, our rockmelons are enormous, sweet and delicious - couldn’t recommend them enough. More figs starting to get around and for those who seek them out, dragonfruit will be half the price they have been over the next couple of weeks. Fresh fruit and yogurt will be the breakfast to enjoy this month.

IN VEGETABLE

As always in January veg is the less significant part of our business. Nonetheless, here we go with this week. All pumpkins and in particular butternut have started to ease in price and our customers will see bargains in this category over the next few weeks. Salads will be a very good option this week with Lebanese cucumbers, baby cues, tomatoes and iceberg lettuce all easing in price as demand goes into reverse with the rain Sydney is having. Beans are back on the menu this week and broccolini and most hard produce remaining inexpensive. The feast of all types of tomatoes continues... in all my career I have not seen so many flavoursome and inexpensive options.
