Dave's Market Update 15.12.15

IN FRUIT

Even more bargains this week than last in the fruit category. The best Queensland mango growers from the best areas are all ramping up this week. The cherries are blacker, sweeter and bigger than last week but still around the same price, look for a really superior 2kg box as we approach Christmas, dearer than our punnets or loose stack but better eating in my view. The two biggest changes favouring the consumer are grapes, especially the white seedless and good eating inexpensive rockmelons. The weather looks perfect everywhere I think we are going to see a bonanza of fruit here for Christmas, Lychees especially the big fat Fay Zee Siu variety (that’s all we are selling this week ) are all eating well and not expensive. The only concern I have is that berries look like they could be dear next week. Coming from far north Queensland we had an enormous number of bananas that will remain cheap for next week and more Papaya than I can ever remember hitting the market at a time when supply would traditionally slow up not increase. So papaya will be cheap ,so cheap in fact that we will have whole boxes for sale at low prices, might be too many for most but you could share a box with someone and that will be the bargain of the week. So my tip is to consider mangoes, cherries and papaya all by the box this week to save money and eat like a king

IN VEGETABLE

Very similar week to last week. Again, as with fruit, excellent growing conditions across the eastern seaboard means good supplies of most lines. Pumpkin is falling in price as supplies increase and I would say will be cheap for Christmas. Tomatoes of all descriptions, caulies and most potatoes except baby kipflers look like remaining steady. Particularly well supplied at this stage are iceberg lettuce, cauliflowers and broccolini. So lots of options though as always strange things can happen in Christmas week.
