Dave's Market Update 30.06.15

IN FRUIT

A couple of different things happening this week. We have our first Cara Cara oranges of the season this week from central west NSW. They originally (only 40 years ago) appeared on a farm in Venezuela and have a very good eating pink/red flesh inside. They are not a blood orange, the bloods are still too early in our view, quite tart in fact, though I see one of the major chains is promoting them this week. They are an early to mid season orange very good to snack on and look great in a salad. Also the imported cherries from USA are at their best this week as we move into the best eating varieties from Washington state. I am never too keen on the Californian cherries, the growing climate is far better with this later fruit from Washington state. Our importers tell us that this year prices will not go much cheaper for large well coloured good eating fruit, so enjoy this week. The other extraordinarily good eating out of season fruit that took me completely by surprise was the plums from USA. Very dark in appearance they are a blood plum and absolutely delicious to eat. Seedless melon and blueberries both show signs of easing and most other fruit is unchanged.

IN VEGETABLE

Telegraph cucumbers have eased back and they are a very good alternative to the still very dear lebanese cucumbers. Lettuce continues to ease as does Broccolini. In corn this week, the prepack represents the better value instead of loose cobs. All onions and most potatoes are still good value. In our imperfect picks selection, I do not think you can go past the extraordinarily good value that the large imperfect kumera represents. If one piece is too much put the leftover back in the fridge where it will keep for a week no trouble . Just trim the end off when you use it again. Its a really great price and eats exactly the same as the far more expensive medium sized pieces. Leeks are at their best in July and there is a flush of yellow caps available this week.
