IN FRUIT
The very sweet and refreshing topless pineapples from Queensland are in good supply this week and I think a must for this week’s shopping basket. Pineapple is a very versatile fruit and can be baked or grilled in either sweet and savoury dishes or eaten fresh. Blood oranges are also in the peak of the season. Blood oranges have a unique flavor profile compared to other oranges, being distinctly raspberry as well as the traditional citrus flavors’. Queensland strawberries are also well supplied and in the peak of their season too. Warmer conditions in South East Queensland seen eating quality improve out of sight and expect to see some excellent opportunities with strawberries in the coming weeks. New season mulberries have also arrived and are available in all stores. Expect to see supply improve over the next few weeks. One of the best imperial mandarin seasons in recent times have come to an end they have been replaced with honey murcotts which are a fantastic eating fruit. The Honey Murcott is a fantastically sweet mandarin. Whilst they have a few more seeds than the Imperial they are extremely juicy and a high sugar content.
IN VEGETABLE
Warmer conditions in the growing areas have seen many of the vegetable lines continue to be in good supply. Red capsicums, cauliflowers, lettuce, celery, carrots, and broccoli are all excellent opportunities this week. New season Australian asparagus is in all Harris Farm Markets stores and have been so well received due to its obvious superior quality compared to the imported ones. For potatoes, Kestrel cocktails would be my pick this week. Equally good for mashing, roasting, boiling and frying, Kestrels are a highly versatile variety which have a subtlety sweet flavour.
