Dave's Market Update 01.17.16

IN FRUIT

More and more signs of Autumn fruit are appearing each week at Harris Farm. This week will see us transition to new season Shepard avocadoes from North Queensland as we finish up our WA and New Zealand Hass. Shepards don’t go black on the skin as they ripen, you must judge the ripeness by the feel of the fruit. Softer fruit is ripe to eat. For me these are my favourite avocadoes for the year and will be available for the next six to eight weeks. Another Autumn favourite is the Brooks mango. This fruit appears quite green in colour but can still be ripe to eat. Look for a tinge of yellow and again let the feel of the fruit be your guide. We will continue to have mangoes for another month but this will probably be the last week of cheaper prices. Sugar and Tegan Blue plums are my pick of the stone fruit this week. The little Sultana and Thompson seedless grapes are particularly good eating. Beware of the cheap white grapes available in supermarkets, these are likely to be Menindee seedless and to have been picked and stored for quite some time and well past their best. Gala apples and Tasmanian blueberries are now fantastic to eat. Again be wary of cheap blueberries, if you have been enjoying our Tassie blues you will be really disappointed with the flavour of the New Zealand fruit that is being sold in supermarkets.

IN VEGETABLE

In vegies we are seeing better stock in beans, broccoli and lettuce in the market this week. All pumpkin and sweet potatoes are very good value and our leafy vegies are improving in quality on a daily basis as we are enjoying cooler days.
