IN FRUIT
Not much change this week from last . Our Williams pears are now out of controlled atmosphere and will keep longer than the fruit we have been selling. In apples Grannies are still a bit sour but are great for cooking, Pink Ladies have not really started but most other varieties are really good now. Grapes and Figs are still fantastic and Seedless Watermelon and Rockmelons are very good quality and cheaper than last week. Passionfruit are still very reasonably priced, and Quinces are in full swing. The Autumn flush of Raspberries has started and I think these are the most flavoursome and delicious of the year. Avocados will be quite dear for the next couple of weeks but will then ease in price. These new season Sheppard (greenskin) avocadoes ripen extremely quickly and once they start to soften need to be kept in the fridge.
IN VEGETABLE
No really big changes in our vegetable supplies, the best value is to be found in the hard produce lines particularly pumpkin, sweet potatoes and onions. This week is seeing a huge flush of Papaya in our stores, very attractively priced. What I would like to share with you this week is the exciting new Buffalo milk products in Harris Farm this week. the brand is Shaw River and comes from the Haldane family farm at Port Fairy near the Victorian and South Australian border. These people are the real deal for Australian Buffalo products, it is amazing to see the herds of Buffalo all over the farm down there where they also have the largest herd of Icelandic horses in the country in fact more than half the total for Australia. Unlike most of their competitors this family does not mix cows milk (as it is legal to do and not declare) with their buffalo product and as a result they produce in my view the finest Mozzarella, Yogurts and hard cheeses in Australia all 100% buffalo. These guys have been flat out selling this product into the restaurant trade and we are excited to be now able to put the products into our retail stores.
