IN FRUIT
Imperial mandarins are now eating very well. Coming from Gayndah in Queensland fruit is arriving to market in solid numbers in what looks to be a good season for mandarins. The new apple season continues to gain momentum. This weeks pick in the apple category is the pink lady. Visually spectacular and really good eating makes pink lady's hard to go past. It appears to be a good season for fuji apples this year which will be welcomed as the last few have been difficult for this apple variety. Keep an eye out for our gala apples. We are currently sourcing our gala apples direct from a farm in Orange in NSW. Gala apples from this region are the best eating at present. Papaya is another really good fruit option this week. Currently we are sourcing the RB1 variety from Mareeba in North Queensland. Be warned not all varieties have the same flavour profile but the RB1’s that we are using have a deep red colour and a rich sweetness capable of converting consumers onto papaya. This week we are highlighting Shepard avocados in our imperfect range. The Sheppard season is in final stages; however we have a good supply this week of the imperfect avocados. The imperfection is some wind and branch rub on the fruit which leaves some scarring on the skin of the fruit. The fruit is mature and perfectly good eating and excellent option this week as premium fruit becomes more expensive due to the transitioning from Sheppard to the hass varieties. The popular Hass variety is just not quite ready at present but is not far away.
IN VEGETABLE
Nicola potatoes are an excellent eating potato and one of my favourites. The Nicola is a medium sized long oval shaped potato that has the most magnificent creamy texture. A yellow skin, yellow flesh potato, Nicola’s are excellent for all purposes but are especially good for boiling (they don’t break apart) and make the most magnificent creamy mash. Nicola’s are also a fantastic baking potato and being a waxy potato Nicola‘s make the most delicious gnocchi. Our Nicola’s are procured directly from our farmer friend Scott Korpershek whose farm is located in Tasmania. Broccoli is in good supply. Coming from both Victoria and Queensland quality is on the improve and price very reasonable. The pick in the tomato category this week are the locally produced cherry tomatoes. Coming from the outskirts of Sydney cherry tomatoes is an old favourite and this week is excellent value a real must for this week’s shopping list.
