Dave's Market Update 08.07.2014

IN FRUIT

Really cold nights from the North of Queensland right down to Tasmania continue to make the procurement of vegetables very difficult. As a result far more of our products have firmed in price then have eased. This situation is quite common at this time of the year and is quickly reversed when some warmer days arrive in August. Perhaps the best bargains this week are to be found in citrus. Navel oranges are as sweet, full of juice and cheap as they are likely to get all season. It is also an excellent season for imperial mandarins from Southern orchards. In past seasons these have not been as good, but this year they are really great - maybe even better than Queensland. Berries also are really superb and pressure is mounting for a big fall in the blueberry price, but they are eating so well that demand is increasing as well as supply. Kiwi fruit, all now from New Zealand are good value, particularly the smaller fruit which we sell in buckets or prepack, bigger fruit is not cheap.

IN VEGETABLE

Vegies remain the problem area with many lines tightening in price, Desiree potatoes are an exception to this with prices finally starting to ease. Back to school next week so look for a range of healthy goodies for the lunch box into next week.
