Dave's Market Update 02.06.15

IN FRUIT

Again nothing new and exciting this week, the navels, mandarins, apples and pears are all very good and I had predicted last week that we would have a lot more berries from Queensland this week but I can't see that happening with the cold snap up there slowing down the ripening of the fruit. Pawpaw and papaya are both still excellent eating and quite inexpensive.

IN VEGETABLE

Colder weather a bit earlier than usual has meant the vegetables we use at this time of the year are taking a little longer than usual to reach maturity. So a lot of vegies are a little dearer than they have been exceptions to this are celery, zucchini, red capsicums, spinach and at last mushrooms. Most other lines are firmer in price. Onions, pumpkin and potatoes continue to be very good value. This is the time of the year that leeks come into their own and there are signs that increased supply will gradually ease the price here. Loose beetroot is also a very good option to add to the winter vegetable menu. Shallots also have eased a little in price and some of our stores have these on special this week.
