IN FRUIT
As always in the first week of May it is imperial mandarins that are dominating our interest and sales this week. With massive supplies arriving at the markets every day from Gayndah in central Queensland, this is one of the best years for quality I can remember. They are juicy, sweet and cheap, a perfect combination, we have some incredible bargains on cases of these this week. The other citrus fruit that has dropped in price is limes with many of our shops selling them cheaper than lemons which only happens rarely. Best of all we are seeing Aussie navel oranges just starting, once they come good in a week or so they are just so much fresher and nicer to eat than the imported fruit that we wonder sometimes why we bother with the imports at all. Our bananas look to be of excellent quality this week and papaya is eating fantastically also. It is the best apple season for some time. Usually one or more varieties of apple will be not so great but this year they are all fantastic. Flavour fall plums though expensive are really delicious and the crimson seedless grapes are still very good.
IN VEGETABLE
Cauliflowers have eased off last weeks record high prices and with the cooler nights now happening are quite affordable and desirable again. Broccoli always highly sought after in winter and summer has really come good for us. Quality is now excellent and the price is way back too. Beans although quite dear are superb quality as we move north to Queensland for supply. This early May vegetable market is always quite tricky as we finish off our Victorian supplies and move to the lower parts of Queensland for our produce. If the two areas cross over then everything is cheap or if there is a couple of weeks gap in supplies then it is very difficult. Corn looks to be in this position for the next 10 days or so.
