Dave's Market Update 15.07.2014

IN FRUIT

It’s back to school this week so our attention turns to filling the lunchbox. We have a couple of great specials at Harris Farm Markets with Imperial mandarins and Pink Lady apples. Our Pink Ladies are the real deal - these days many of the apples sold as pink ladies are not actually pink ladies at all but similar looking apples -but very highly coloured, varieties such as Rosie Glow and Lady in Red, they simply do not eat as well These have been developed to fit supermarket specifications on colour as opposed to my specifications which revolve around taste. These apples are not as highly coloured as some but they really do eat well. As well, we have fantastic value sweet and juicy imperial mandarins on special in our stores this week. If neither of these options fit the bill for the kids two other great options are to be found in kiwi fruit especially the smaller basket or packet fruit and bananas which though not on special at all our shops remain very, very good value.

IN VEGETABLE

Vegies continue to be very very scarce. In Queensland last week the overnight temperatures were colder than Sydney. We rely on Queensland for these couple of months to supply the great majority of our vegies and they just don't grow when overnight temperatures linger around five degrees. So not lots of options in this area best buys for the week are Nicola potatoes, yellow capsicums and leeks these all represent good value and are cheaper than last week.
