Dave's Market Update 22.04.2014

IN FRUIT

Those wonderful imperial mandarins are the most popular fruit at this time of the year. Sweet and juicy, easy to peel, they are a favourite for all generations. This season looks to be a really good one at this stage. For the first time in three years Mother Nature has been kind to our Central Queensland farmers. Other fruit that is really good value are the apples, red grapes and paw-paw which is always better eating in winter than in summer. The other good news is that cyclone Ita has not wiped out the Queensland banana crop. The traditional growing areas were not effected however the newer tableland and Mareeba areas did suffer damage that will lessen supply but not drastically.

IN VEGETABLE

There will be some fallout to tomatoes, capsicum, corn and beans in the late July and August period. We will cross that bridge when we come to it. We have lots of good vegies on hand this week. For tomatoes you cannot go past cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes which are similar in price by the kilogram to our traditional gourmet and truss tomatoes in fact cheaper than truss and I feel tastier as well. Red capsicums have eased in price and we are seeing traditional winter lines like caulies, broccoli, fennel and cabbage all arriving in good numbers.
