Dave's Market Update 03.03.15

IN FRUIT

The fruit I’m going to recommend this week is honeydew melon. I am very cautious doing this as I think they are only really fantastic to eat for a very short time of the year which is right now. There are both yellow and white honeydews, but this year there does not seem to be as many yellows as we have seen in previous years. They love hot weather and so the flavour right now is fantastic. In regards to picking a good honey dew - I see people shaking them, tapping them etc. These actions are irrelevant. Much more relevant is where they come from and what time of the year – and you will have to trust our judgement at Harris Farm on this – it’s right now! Plums and grapes remain the pick of the stone fruit and Tegan Blue is the plum of the week again. Some very good black grapes are now available – Black Americas . Note that this is the variety, not where the grape is grown. Don’t forget to enjoy those honeydew melons!

IN VEGETABLE

Vegies are in reasonable supply with the exception of most of our washed potatoes (red and white varieties) other than standard brushed potatoes. This is the after effect of the hot weather in South Australia which did great damage at the time. All pumpkins remain very good value as do kumera and carrots. Lettuce is easing in price.
