IN FRUIT
A fantastic special in our stores this week are the smaller sized Granny Smith apples. By this time of the year they are somewhat sweeter than a month ago. Our super price this week means these apples work out at between 20 cents and 30 cents each - great value for the school lunchbox. Together with grapes, mandarins and bananas all being very reasonably priced I feel the school lunch box is sorted! Strawberries are as always in the second half of May very dear and of doubtful quality. The long weekend in June is when strawberries normally come good again. However blueberries are fantastic and starting to ease in price. This does not usually happen now - there are some new varieties getting underway that are fabulous to eat.
IN VEGETABLE
A colder May in the growing areas up north has seen a lighter supply of the vegetables that come from those areas. As we have come to expect, there are still some products that continue to be very good value. Tomatoes are quite well supplied this week with both Gourmet and Kumato varieties lessening in price. The Gourmet tomatoes are from North Queensland and are probably as well priced as we have seen them since last September. The Kumato pre-packs are fantastic to eat and this week similar in price to our Truss tomatoes, but in my view better flavour. Potatoes continue to improve and all pumpkins remain excellent value. Capsicums are easing in price but caulies, broccoli and beans are all dearer in price. A new product line in Harris Farm Markets this week are baby carrots - 3 or 4 different colours pre-packed. They store well and are an ideal serving size for 2 to 4 people, thoroughly recommended.
