IN FRUIT
A mild winter up in Northern Queensland has meant that bananas are at their best. The last few days of much colder weather will bring this to a rapid end but for now, the fruit is bright, healthy, tasty and cheap. Citrus and all apples remain very good value and the fuyu from New Zealand are somewhat cheaper than they have been. I had Kiwi Gold for breakfast today - they were sensational. Not a lot of good news this week, sick of winter now, bring on the Spring but i think it is a bit premature for that.
IN VEGETABLE
This really cold spell has cut supply of many vegetables. In addition to growing issues, transport and harvesting have both been difficult with many roads cut by snow and trucks avoiding loads to or from where these issues exist. This will be fairly short lived but the slower growth of vegies will last a bit longer. So most vegies are scarcer and dearer than last week. Potatoes, leeks and onions are not affected at this stage and there is more than enough lettuce available given that most people don’t really want to tuck into a salad at these temperatures. Egg tomatoes have also come on strongly. I prefer the flavour of egg tomatoes to a gourmet tomato but usually they are significantly dearer, but not so this week. There are probably only 4 or 5 weeks each year that this happens, so enjoy this special at our stores this week.
