IN FRUIT
The fruit I am most excited about this week is the new season Australian navel oranges. After months of imported fruit it is wonderful to taste the fresh crisp flavour of an Aussie navel. May is a really great month for all citrus with Ruby Grapefruit also easing in price and Imperial Mandarins still being the favourite for the school lunch box even though they are slightly dearer than last week. All apples continue to be great value and in melons it is still honeydews that are the best eating though this week it is the yellow varieties not the white that I would select. They are very large melons and a half may suffice however once cut melons have a very limited shelf life. In other tropical fruit we have some very sweet imperfect pick topless pineapples, not the prettiest fruit but fantastic to eat. Both Paw Paw and Papaya are cheap and flavoursome, it is hard to pick between the two.
IN VEGETABLE
We still have a few bargains on winter veg in the stores this week. All stores have absolutely fantastic Dutch Cream potatoes on at a very special price, as with the Nicolas potatoes from a couple of weeks ago from Scott Korpersheck in North Western Tasmania. Just dug fresh for us on the weekend, I will be putting a few of these in the cupboard, at this price for this quality you cant go wrong. Other good winter veg include beans, celery and brussel sprouts. Onions of all varieties and iceberg lettuce also continue to be well priced.
