Dave's Market Update - 16.06.15

IN FRUIT

Queensland strawberry season is now gathering some momentum. The season suffered from the storms earlier in the year which wiped out the early plantings effectively putting the season three weeks behind. Strawberries are in reasonable supply and most importantly eating very well. Good news for bananas buyers with prices starting to ease, after consecutive weeks of good volumes being cut out of North Queensland. Banana quality is on the improve with flavour profile excellent. Seedless watermelon from the Northern Territory is some of the best eating melons we produce. The anomaly is it comes in the middle of winter when demand is not at its best. Crunchy as an apple and as sweet as honey, I think that you should put Northern Territory seedless watermelon back on your shopping lists.

IN VEGETABLE

Some moderate temperatures in the growing regions of Queensland have lead to strong supply of many of the vegetable lines. Lettuce, broccoli, capsicums, celery, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, beans and zucchini are all well supplied with both price and quality. Brussels sprouts, the much maligned vegetable of the past, has had something of a second coming with new smaller and sweeter varieties being grown giving them a resurgence in popularity. This week they are in excellent supply with eating quality superb. Tomatoes from Bowen, North Queensland are in good supply and fantastic quality and value. Tomatoes from this region are widely accepted as some of the best in Australia.
