Dave's Market Update - 24.03.15

IN FRUIT

Lovely Australian Pomegranates are now reasonably priced in our stores this week. It is a difficult situation for we at Harris Farm Markets that the best eating Pomegranates are not the most attractive fruit available. We have opted to give our customers the good eating fruit rather than the cleanest best looking fruit. Another very popular fruit starting to arrive in quantity is Fuyu fruit, the hard persimmons. As with last week we are seeing all apples improve in supply (apart from Pink Ladies), we have some very good quality delicious apples in the stores this week. Best news is that bananas have eased in price with some bargains to be had here. We have very good value rockmelons, quinces and the first of the chestnuts in stock this week. With grapes the white seedless are coming to an end but I can thoroughly recommend the Crimson seedless that are on our shelves this week, not highly coloured, in fact a little on the pale side, this fruit is better than the whites. Berries are tightening up as seems to happen every Easter but there are bargains to be had with the small strawberries we have at the moment.

IN VEGETABLE

Vegetables remain difficult to procure. The combination of some cooler temperatures in Victoria and some planting gaps caused by heavy rain earlier in the year is primary reason for the high prices. Hard produce is less affected and remains very reasonably priced. The outstanding vegetable product this week is broccolini. A combination of broccoli and kale, broccolini is renown for its tenderness and sweetness. Very well priced and outstanding quality, broccolini is a must for shoppers this week.
