Dave's Market Update - 21.07.15

IN FRUIT

Citrus and bananas continue to be well supplied, but there is little change in prices since last week. Apples are firming in price as are tomatoes. Berries are largely unchanged, however, the growers tell me that there are berries everywhere and as soon as we see a few warm days up north the floodgates will open. Bring on the warmer weather!

IN VEGETABLE

Much the same story as last week I am afraid. Really cold weather in all growing areas is really starting to make vegetable procurement a nightmare. The basic potato and onion categories are still well supplied as some of these have been harvested just before the cold weather occurred. Salad items, particularly Iceberg Lettuce and Cucumbers, have eased as most customers opt for a hearty stew rather than a salad. About the only good point with this weather is that next summers stone fruit needs cold weather now to ensure a good flowering in Spring to form the fruit. We are certainly getting that in spades, so that is the foundation for a good summer season.
