IN FRUIT
The other line that excites me is the start of Northern Territory mangoes. They are a couple of weeks earlier than they have been for the last three years and they are juicy and succulent, surprisingly so for this early in the season. Mangoes are of course the harbinger of the local stone fruit season which drives our business through summer. Navel oranges remain a firm favourite for winter and some of the thinner skinned fantastic varieties are starting to adorn our shelves. The berry season continues to delight our customers, blueberries and strawberries remain my favourites, although I am not as enthusiastic about the raspberries at this stage. Plenty of grapes about and tomato prices remain steady. Lots of apples still and the first of the New Zealand avocadoes will lead to cheaper prices in the coming weeks.
IN VEGETABLE
A very exciting week for us at Harris Farm with spring vegetables now properly underway. The standout product for me at this time of the year is our new season Australian asparagus. It is young, tender, flavoursome and fresh. It is so much better than the imported product that we barely tolerate through winter that it is hard to believe it is the same vegetable. The coming couple of months are the peak time for this wonderful vegetable. Spinach, English spinach, rhubarb and all the Chinese bunch vegetable lines are all at their best also. We have a fantastic special across the company this week with those fantastic Kestrel cocktail potatoes at ten years ago prices. Most vegetables are cheaper and better with this fabulous weather.
