IN FRUIT
This is the time of the year our attention swings from the wonderful Spring vegetables we have been enjoying to our new season summer fruits. We have fantastic new season seedless watermelon at half the price it was a week ago. All our peaches and nectarines are Aussie now and starting to eat really well. New season Victorian strawberries are replacing the now tired Qld and West Australian fruit. Mangoes have slowed up a bit as we are between the first and second flowerings in the territory and the first cherries are now in the market, however these are the softer early varieties and I think wait a week or so before starting them. We now have what are in my opinion the best pink lady apples of the year on our premium stacks. These come from the south of Western Australia and are in a class of their own. They are the true original pink lady apples which were developed in West Australia in the mid 1970s. Since then our major supermarkets have pressured most growers into changing into a much more highly coloured but inferior eating apple which is in fact a Rosy Glow not a Pink Lady, but they elect to sell them as a pink, when in fact they are not. These WA apples keep longer than the fruit from the Eastern states, a bit dearer but a lot better.
IN VEGETABLE
Best news on the vegetable front is that we have decent Australian garlic in our stores again. Each year it comes a bit earlier and lasts a bit longer so the gap where we have none is ever diminishing. There was a time when we only had the Aussie product for three months, now we only don’t have it for the same time span. A great product that we have this week on special in a lot of our stores are golden grape tomatoes. These are, I think, one of the most tasty of the myriad of snacking tomatoes now available. Other fantastic value this week is to be found in cauliflowers, telegraph cucumbers, kale and Dutch carrots.
