IN FRUIT
This week we complete our transition to Hass avocados. As much as we love the Shepards, by late last week they were not keeping well. The Hass will get better every week. These early Hass from central Queensland are really plentiful and so there will be bargains over the coming weeks. This week we have some fantastic options in store with our imperfect range and of particular note are Hass avocados, Pink Ladies and for something a little different Corella pears. The Pink Lady story is an interesting one and if you are interested visit my pick of the week section for a fully detailed explanation. Perhaps the best news is that we are seeing a rapid fall in berry prices as the new season berries get underway. Winter in Australia is the time of the year for berries and early signs are foreboding a cracker of a season. Right now the strawberries are an excellent proposition, we are looking to a deluge of stock next week and a commensurate drop in prices. Other good options this week include sweet topless pineapples, and the imperial mandarins are still very good.
IN VEGETABLE
Winter vegetables are now in full production. This is an excellent week for cauliflowers, leeks and beans. Beans are particularly good, all of Harris Farm beans this week are handpicked which does cost a little more but the end product is definitely superior to the rougher machine picked product that is all the major supermarkets stock. The old season local pumpkins of all varieties are coming to an end with new season just around the corner - the new crops are never quite as tasty however. Loose beetroot is very cheap and it is a wonderful addition to a winters bake. The leafy vegetables have not been damaged with frost just yet but I suspect that is about to happen. Tomatoes have just begun to ease as Queensland crops really get underway, so lots of excellent options this week.
