IN FRUIT
Grapes especially Crimson Seedless, passionfruit and Kiwi gold are the best options this week. As I mentioned in my pick of the week column Crimson Seedless are the freshest grape and don’t be concerned if they are a bit small or a bit pale. Its all about the taste! Passionfruit are in one of their seasonal peaks this week and although those nets of ten we sell them in look a bit ordinary the fruit is eating sensationally. I love them on my papaya for breakfast. Australia has an international reputation for growing the best Kiwi Gold in the world. It seems our climate is perfect for this fruit. Though not as sturdy as the traditional green kiwi, the Gold is much sweeter and highly sought after all over the world. Rockmelons and apples continue to be very popular and this week limes have reduced in price, our nets represent tremendous value. New fruits in season this week include Corella pears, Pink Lady apples and Imperial mandarins, all of these will improve over the next few weeks the first of any fruit is never the best. For early pomegranates I recommend you look at our imperfect offer. They really are imperfect, but guess what, inside they are perfect, and less than half price of their attractive brothers.
IN VEGETABLE
Very little news here this week. Zucchini and Dutch carrots are plentiful and good. Beetroot and cabbage have eased in price. Beans are as difficult and dear as I have ever seen them. Lebanese cues and Jap pumpkin are great value and kumera on the larger side is great value. You can cut this large kumara in half and leave it in your fridge for later use, just shave off a centimetre or so from the cut end when you are ready to use it again.
