IN FRUIT
The big change for us this week is the start of the new season Shepard avocados - they are my favourite (see more info in my pick of the week). Also, right on time for Easter we have lots of new season lemons to accompany the seafood feasts we all love. Seedless watermelon is still selling well. The weather is still warm (although the nights a bit cooler) and the price is still very attractive. Rockmelons are also great. All the grapes are still fantastic, except black muscatels which are now finished for the year. Sadly there are no mandarins from Australia available this Easter as it has fallen a lot earlier than normal. A couple of different options this year are chestnuts which are not dear, and a really left of field option is kiwi berries - probably as cheap as I have ever seen them.
IN VEGETABLE
Spinach and broccolini are both well supplied and of excellent quality. This week, we have again turned to our imperfect offering to create some great specials. The standout here is red capsicum. They are too small to make the grade in the premium offer but are very solid, great quality and a really great price. As always, there is a rush of seafood over Easter and as a result, all herbs (especially dill and coriander) are in very high demand. However, there does seem to be sufficient supply to keep customers satisfied. Washed potatoes are always in demand for Easter... this year being both warmer and earlier than normal has led to some quality issues here. We feel the Kestrel variety are a better option of the two this week.
