Dave's Market Update - 15.03.16

IN FRUIT

We are now transitioning to Autumn fruit. Australian pomegranates now replace the imports, quinces get underway as do chestnuts and in grapes, this is the time the red seedless which are harvested later than the whites are the better buy from every perspective. In avocados, we say farewell to the black skinned Hass fruit and cross over to the green skinned Sheppards - I will discuss this in depth next week. Seedless watermelon is plentiful and apple supplies continue to grow. With cooler weather down south the strawberry quality is improving every day and raspberries are still a bargain. The mango season is nearly over and the last variety are the brooks. These are a good eating mango which are green in appearance with a yellow tinge... judge their ripeness by feel not look. Figs are still excellent. I firmly believe my caution on peaches and nectarines are very sound advice, see my pick of the week comments. Beware of cheap specials on these lines, you will almost inevitably get what you pay for. As I mention in the pick of the week, plums are a better safer option this week with both the Angelino and October Sun varieties being fresh picked, sweet, juicy and great value.

IN VEGETABLE

Biggest bargain of the week is telegraph cucumbers... way cheaper than last week, way cheaper than Lebanese cucumbers. Cauliflowers have eased in price as well and we have some great bargains out there with imperfect sweet potato and imperfect kumera. The onion quality is still at its best, and spinach has eased in price.
